There is a great deal happening in the area of Virtual Reality that is focused on helping cancer patients and survivors cope with the anxiety and stress of living daily with cancer. We are making our difference by creating a Cancer Survivor Clubhouse.
If you are house-bound, have low energy levels or cope with body image issues then you may want to spend time with us. Make new friends & together enjoy an immersive experience sitting on the beach, sailing in a quiet lagoon, attending a musical event or exploring a foreign land all within the virtual world of Second Life. Clubhouse members are easily finding ways to augment their quality of life.
Every week there are both professional support meetings and a variety of fun activities. To see what is currently happening view this link.
Using the form below, please add your name to our mailing list to receive announcements of our frequent video broadcasts and special events. There is no cost to join our Cancer Survivor Clubhouse community and we’d love to have you as a member.
How to become a member of the Cancer Survivor Clubhouse
Start by first visiting the virtual world Second Life (SL) found at http://secondlife.com/. When you visit their home page select the option to pick your personal avatar (your clubhouse identity) with the JOIN NOW button. There is no fee or cost to join. You’ll find our Second Life training tutorials here.
You will then be asked to pick an avatar, enter your email address and give your avatar a name. Your avatar name will be displayed on the screen when you’re in Second Life so choose a name that you want to be displayed. Don’t worry too much about the look & feel of the avatar as you can change everything in the future… you can even have different avatars for different purposes i.e. biz casual, beachwear, winter gear.
You will then be asked to download the Second Life (SL) viewer which is the application you will use to visit destinations like our Cancer Clubhouse. After you download, just enter your login information and you’ll be taken to the SL Orientation Island where you will learn how to make your avatar walk, run, jump and fly. You should also practice with the voice options so that you can talk with others rather than only text chat. Most people spend about 15-20 minutes learning the basics of avatar animation. All you really have to learn is how to use your keyboard arrow keys so don’t worry about any potential techie issues. Remember to watch our Second Life training tutorials here.
Once you have your avatar and know the basic movement skills, then you are ready to visit the Cancer Survivor Clubhouse. To receive the address to find us, complete the form below and you’ll receive an email with the link to use. Enter that link in the Second Life viewer or just enter it in your normal web browser. If you use your web browser you will be taken to a page with a white alert box which displays an orange button asking you to click to “Visit this location”. When you click that orange button it will launch your Second Life viewer, you can log in to Second Life and then you’ll be taken to our clubhouse.
If you have any challenges just let me know and I’ll visit with you in Second Life and walk you through some tips and tricks. Just click Ask Dave
